1st Reading Isaiah 61: 1-2, 10-11
1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

Psalm Luke 1: 46-50, 53-54
46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.
53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.
54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,

2nd Reading 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-24
16 Rejoice always,
17 pray constantly,
18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
19 Do not quench the Spirit,
20 do not despise prophesying,
21 but test everything; hold fast what is good,
22 abstain from every form of evil.
23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 He who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.

Gospel John 1: 6-8, 19-28
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him.
8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light.
19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
20 He confessed, he did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ."
21 And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No."
22 They said to him then, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
23 He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, `Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said."
24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.
25 They asked him, "Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?"
26 John answered them, "I baptize with water; but among you stands one whom you do not know,
27 even he who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."
28 This took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Written Transcript of Homily

I'll try to make it as painless as possible; but this is gonna involve some Greek words and possibly some Hebrew.

You're all awake, right?

You know, I always think that the Lord speaks most powerfully in the scripture, in the parts that you don't understand. When you don't understand something, I…well, at least for me, that's where God is trying to tell me something.

Well, I was looking at the readings, and I thought…

The first reading, that the Lord God, that the spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me.

Glad tidings to the poor, ext. ext….to announce a year of favor to the Lord.

And the word "favor" caught my eye.

What the heck does that mean? Favor.

Favor,

Mary, Mary is when the angel of God appeared to Mary he called her highly favored one. Or God has favored you.

And the scripture says Noah found favor in God's eyes.

I thought, what does it mean?

And of course, I looked it up.

And I was a little disappointed by what I saw.

Because it's just the word for grace.

(? ? ? ). C-H-A-R-I-S-T it would be in English.

It's the word for Grace.

Well, we all know what Grace is.

Well, I guess I really don't…because I don't think of "Grace" and "Favor" in the same breath.

Grace is that stuff God gives you to get through 24 hours, you know?

Grace is that strength that comes from God, I always think

And that's true

But that's not "favor"

So I thought, what does favor mean…

And you know, perhaps you've heard me say this, but it was this time of year I got my start in show business.

The Christmas pageant.

When I was six years old in first grade.

Now, I had a nun teaching me, who will remain nameless, because I am amazed that I am still a Catholic after having to endure this woman.

This woman was …. Very difficult.

Uh, fact is I was having a conversation with a few people, and we were discussing how difficult our first grade nun had been.

And we came from three different schools.

Turned out it was the same woman.

She had eventually left the convent and started working in a ( ? ? ? ) prison. She had found her neesh, I think.

But!

Why should I burden you with my problems..

Now where was I…

..this nun, was very difficult.

And I was – and  not this is not easy to believe, but I was not a perfect child.

Once upon a time I remember I was packing groceries in Jewel and Mrs. O'Harris came by and well…she said, "ooh, I remember the day you were born" and I expected "you were wonderful, perfect, gorgeous."

And she said "You were horrible, your mother didn't sleep. Your mother didn't sleep for a year."

And I went home and said, "Ma, is that true?" She said "No, you were a perfect baby."

Which… I may still be.

Where was I

Yeah, I was not a perfect child, and it was very rare that I got to go through a whole recess.

You know, when they let the kids out to breath.

You know, the standard punishment was you don't get recess.

Well, it was very rare I got through recess.

And I was out, enjoying those 15 minutes of freedom, out in the ( ? ? ? ) yard.

And somebody came and said "Sister, wants to see you"
and I thought "eh.." and I went in and she was standing there with a woman who was going to fit me out for a costume for the Christmas pageant! And I thought…whoa, maybe my luck is turning around.

Well, it was the costume of the donkey.

IT didn't matter! It was just great, it didn't occur to me until I was an adult!

Wait a minute, that was sarcasm.

I remember talking to one of my school mates, and we all knew it at the time, it was a statement at the part of our teacher.

But, this was great, I got to be the donkey.

And I (? ? ? ) donkey ( ? ?) audience, but I managed.

I had to (? ? ? ) Mary Sue Ellen on the stage and it was a great privilege.

That was favor.

That was grace.

At least, I thought it was.

Who, me?!

Have you ever picked out for something special? That's favor!

The favor of the Lord, this is the year of favor, the prophet says.

That is a dimension of grace.

That isn't just God saying, "Yeah, alright, I'll give you a pass on this. I'll give you what you need to get through it."

Oh, no, no, no.

Favor is….come here, I want YOU, who me?

Well, that's true for all of us.

That's one of the reasons God chooses to be called father.

Not mother

Your mother, she loves you no matter what.

It's her job description, right?
That's why the Church is the mother, she's gotta take you in no matter what.

But dads ….they can be kind of picky.

Can't they?

Well, when a father beams with pridea bout his son or daughter, that's favor.

And that's why God chooses to be called "father" in relationship with us.

He is infinitely more to us than "Father" or "mother" or anything.

But he chooses to be called Father.

Because…. He made you for Himself.

That is favor.

Mary was uniquely favored by God

But you are uniquely favored by God.

That's the amazing, amazing truth of the Christian message.

That God really is nuts about you.

That's why He made you.

This vast universe, in which this little galaxy is but a pin prick, and we are but a speck on a pin prick, but He fixes all His attention not only on this galaxy or this plaent, but he fixes it on this building, not only the row you are sitting in, but the seat you are sitting in.

He knows your name.

And has a better one still prepared for you.

This is the favor the Lord.

Well, that's the good news.

The bad news is…as (? ? ?) said to God, as he was bringing his limping horse back from rounds, ( ? ? ) from Fiddler on the Roof said, "God, I know we are the chosen people, but couldn't you have chosen someone else?"

Now and then.

Nobody ever preaches about that pasture in ( ? ? ) in which God says "I, the lord your God, is a jealous God. My name is jealous."

oooh..

God is jealous?
Yes.

And He has the right to be.

You don't have the right to be.

But he does, though.

He made you for Himself.

He made you for Himself.

You wouldn't expect one of my sermons to be thoroughly cheerful, so here's the hard part.

You wouldn't expect one of my sermons to be thoroughly cheerful, so here's the hard part.

John says, "I baptize you with water, there's one come after me, by sandal strap I am not worthy to untie."
In, I believe in Luke's version of this, he goes on to say:

"His winnowing fan is in His hand, He will baptize you with fire and the Holy Spirit."

Well, I've shared with you, and we'll share again.

The process of threshing is a very difficult process.

We do it by machine now, but in the old days they'd actually have the oxen walk over the grain, because you see, you have to break the outer husk of grain.

And separate it.

You got the chaff, which is that outer husk from the pure corneal of grain which is useful.

And what you do is, you go up on a high hill, and you have the oxen walk all over this, and you drag heavy things over it. You have to have a flat service, a hard service, a stone service…

And it's called a threshing floor.

And the grain breaks, and when you've thoroughly broken the grain, and the oxen have walked all over the grain…

..it doesn't make bread sound very appetizing.

But, that's how it was done.

Heat kills all the germs, don't worry.

And besides, they do it with machines now.

Well they take a big fan, it looks like one of those big shovels, those big pizza shovels for the oven, and they just throw the grain up in the air, in the wind. There has to be a high place, a steady, gentle little wind.

It blows the lighter husk away from the grain.

And so what you get is two piles.

A pile of chaff and a little pile of grain.

And the grain is what you're going for.

Well, what have you got?
You've got crushing

And separating.

You know the Holy Spirit is called wind and fire.

The wind separates you from the chaff.

And then the fire burns up the chaff.

I, the Lord your God am a jealous God.

The scripture says.

And this is the good news…first the good news and the bad news – it's all the same.

He will have you for Himself.

As you go on in life, and as you go in God.

Hm… there's a lot of separation, isn't there?
Ther'e sa lot of separation.

You know, if you say, "If God loves me, if I am favored by the Lord, why have I lost this? Why is that gone, why are the kids living in San Diego" or someplace warm.

Why have lost so much?
All of s can say that.

Life Is full of lost.

Most of us want to look at God as, well, dare I say it, Santa Claus.

He's supposed to give us stuff.

And prayer is the work of convincing Him He's supposed to give us stuff.

God doesn't see it that way.

God seperates us from the chaff.

And I lost in my life some pretty nice chaff, let me tell you.

I'm not just talking about things, I'm talking about people.

That's a hard thing.

Specially since we come towards the Holidays, to look at what we have lost.

Well, from God's perspective… He is threshing you.

This is His favor to you.

He has chosen you for Himself.

And you needn't be afraid of it.

Because, you see,  there's another part

Of what we believe.

In the book of Revelation, we see, "Behold; I make all things new."
Christmas is the promise that all things will be new.

That what has been taken from you, will be restored.

God takes it from you….only that He may give you Himself.

And when you have received Him, and understand that you belong to Him, and He belongs to you.

And he can restore it all to you again.

A year of favor from the Lord.

God has looked from His throne in Heaven, we believe, and seen you. And He so loved you that He gave His only begotten son.

SO much can be taken from us, but there is one thing that can never be taken.

"I am convinced", Saint Paul says in his letter to the Romans," that neither death nor life, nor power, nor principality. Not the sword, not hunger, no famine, can ever separate us from the Love of God which is ours in Jesus Christ."

To believe, to embrace the idea that God really does love me, that in my sorrows that He loves me even more, that is the heart of the gospel.

So, let us pray we are able to receive His love and to believe in His love, and so believe it to share it with the world, which is so desperate for it.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.
